THE CHATEAU D’EPIRE
The Château d’Epiré is one of the oldest and famous vineyards of the Appellation Savennières Controllée.It has been in the family since the XVIIth century.
The vineyard has 11 hectares (27,2 acres) of which 9 are for the Savennières production of the grape variety chenin.
The wines of Savennières and Epiré
The Château was built in 1850.Like elsewhere in France vines were planted in Anjou as early as the Roman era. But it is from the IXth century that the vines of Epiré were cultivated more intensively.
During the Plantagenet period in the XIth century, the exportation of wines started from Savennières and Epiré to Great Britain.
That is probably why we find in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge some Savennières wine lovers.
Ancient roman church
The cellars are located in the ancient roman church in the village Epiré, bought by my grand-father in 1882 during the construction of the new church. He converted it into a chais in 1906.If you want to come and visit us, follow the map.
